At lunchtime, I left the library and briefly stopped off at Zeeâs bakery to buy a muffin before heading to the seafront. The sun was still out despite the cloudy sky, though I had little doubt that weâd be back to rainstorms before we knew it, and I resolved to enjoy the warmth while I had the chance.
I took Jet with me, and he chattered away in my ear as we walked to the beach. Iâd also brought the bag of treats to give him in exchange for obeying my commands, which did seem to be helping despite Aunt Candace distracting him by sending him out in search of gossip. Yet with the weekend looming and the exam on the other side, I could only hope that our preparation had been enough.
While I finished my muffin, I went looking for Robin and Tansy. Iâd assumed the guests from the inn would be out on the beach enjoying the weather despite the nocturnal disturbances last night, but I didnât see any signs of Tansyâs fluffy red tail anywhere. When I reached the inn, a familiar red flicker caught my eye behind an open window three floors up.
âJet, can you fly up there and ask Tansy to fetch Robin and bring her outside?â
I assumed she was inside, but this was hardly the weather to be sitting indoors. Unless sheâd taken it upon herself to read the entire library book that sheâd taken out the previous day, which she might have. From Aunt Adelaideâs comments about her influential family, I wondered who else had come with her. They hadnât come to the library, though, and since Robin had almost seen through Sylvesterâs facade, perhaps it was better that none of her other family members had been there too. Given Sylvesterâs antics earlier, I was doubly glad she hadnât mentioned anything to his face either.
I raised my head to watch my familiar, trying to forget the prospect of the owlâs wrath when I returned to the library. Jet perched on the windowsill, and Tansy poked her little head out of the window, giving a squeak of acknowledgement before disappearing within the room.
Jet flew back down to me. âSheâs on her way downstairs, partner!â
Raised voices drifted from the open window, including Robinâs, but I couldnât make out the words.
âAll right,â I said. âJet, can you fly to the police station and let me know if anyone mentions any theories about the mystery monster?â
He took off while I waited outside the inn. A few minutes later, Robin emerged through the front door, wearing an expression of mild annoyance. âHey, Rory.â
âHey,â I said. âIâm guessing you heard the latest?â
âI did.â She scanned the beach, Tansy settling on her shoulder. âGood, the police arenât out. I did wonder if they would be.â
âHave you been outside yet?â
âNot for long,â she answered. âMy mother insisted on me reading the book you loaned me, or as much of it as I can cover in a day or two.â
âYour mumâs up there?â I indicated the open window.
